My Business:

Have you ever seen those big oversized trucks come down the highway? The ones with the big “Oversize” or “Wide Load” signs on the front and back of the truck? Well, those trucks need permits from each state that they go through. Permits that tell them what roads they can travel on and when they can drive down them. What I do is get those permits from each of the states (and sometimes the cities or counties they go through) for the truckers.

All of the work is done over the internet, the phone and fax. Which is why this is a perfect home based business. Customers don’t come to the office, I don’t have to travel anywhere to get the permits, and there is no inventory to store. The downside is that some of the permits are extremely expensive and some of them have to be paid for at time of purchase. By expensive I mean upwards around $800. We charge extra for permits that are over a certain amount though, so it is worth it.

My Beginning:

I started working for a company back in 2002 as a dispatcher for Pilot Cars. A pilot car is a vehicle that follows some oversized loads to make sure they are safe while traveling. This was my first introduction to this side of the trucking industry. Coming from a family of truckers, I fit perfectly for this line of work. My grandfather was a trucker and owned a small trucking company. When I was very small my mom took over that trucking company and turned it into a medium sized successful company. Needless to say, trucking was in my blood.

After working in dispatch for about a year, I started training as a permit agent in that company. Then a year later, a much better (although smaller) company wooed me away. This new company was more relaxed and had a “family” feel to it. I was very happy there and did really well. I worked there for about 3 years when Steve, my boyfriend, decided he wanted to move to Las Vegas to live cheaper and get a good job in he IT sector out there.

Working From Home:

I knew that I was going to move to Vegas with my boyfriend, no matter what happened, but I was hoping to talk my boss into letting me continue doing my job at home. I knew he had done this with other people within the company, and felt that he would be willing to work with me on this. Luckily, he felt that I was a valuable employee and didn’t want to lose me and we negotiated some details about pay and such. In the end he agreed to allow me to work at home in Las Vegas.

Starting My Own Company:

Unfortunately, some other people from my first company also were hired at the new company. They were not ideal employees. They were mostly lazy and didn’t want to work as hard as others. Sometimes this is a contagious attitude, and it spread amongst a lot of the other employees. I started getting more and more frustrated because I had to rely on the people in the home office to do certain things, and they weren’t willing to do them.

My customers weren’t being treated with respect or courtesy, and neither was I. part of the original negotiation for allowing me to work from home was a lower pay rate for a certain amount of time, and then it would gradually go up to my previous wage. This didn’t happen as we had agreed upon and I was starting to have problems financially. I was getting increasingly frustrated and unhappy with the way things were going with the company. Add to that I was also having medical problems with my back and ended up having surgery on it in Jan of 2008. Which of course my time off work just exagerated all the problems I was having with work.

My boyfriend had been trying to talk me into starting our own company not long after we moved to Las Vegas. I was extremely reluctant at first because of how expensive the permits are and how stressful the business can be at times. The winter can get very slow because of snow and closures very little is moving around the country. then in the summer it’s the exact opposite, where you can be so busy you can’t get everything done in one day and of course it all needs to be done yesterday. But with all the problems I was having with my co-workers and my boss not paying me what he had promised, it wasn’t long before I was agreeing to it.

Finally in July of 2008 we had all of our ducks in a row, some money saved up, and we opened our business. We’ve grown exponentially since then. We’ve been going strong for almost two years now. It’s been rough at times, but we’ve made it through each of those rough patches and not only come out ahead but come out champions! Partially thanks to our wonderful friend and SEO guru at SEOME. He’s made sure that we are on top of the organic search results on almost all of our search terms (we beat my old boss at that on everything! HA!). I never thought that SEO would make such a huge difference in this industry but it has been proven that our website is a HUGE draw for at least 80% of the customers we get.

Although we’re still struggling and new, we’re growing more and more all the time. I”m thrilled with my business and where it’s going. We’re even training my mom to do some permits right now, because we’re going to need her this summer when things get really busy. We may even be able to start training my oldest son as well! This summer will definitely be an exciting one for us becuase of the growth we’ve had over the winter. So we’re going to need their help for sure.

For a while now, I’ve been doing a few reviews here and there, on this site, and my others. I have one website, Books4Moms, that I only do book reviews on. I love it, mostly because I get lots of great free books, but also because I get lots of great free books! Of course there are some not so great free books, but the point is the GREAT free books. I’ve done other reviews on Best Homeschool Place for homeschool services, programs, curriculum, books, games, and even some movies. I’ve also done some reviews for TV shows on my personal website, Wyndsong Writes. Reviews are fun! One, because you get something free, usually it’s something good and fun, and then you have something to blog about! Something more than just, “Hi, My name is Christine, and I’m a mommy blogger”. That’s all the GOOD stuff about reviewing products and stuff…. so what’s the bad stuff?

The bad stuff is trying to find the things to review. There are plenty of places out there that have pay for posts and paid reviews, but most of them (that you can find at places like SponsoredReviews or Pay Per Post), don’t really care if you have any experience about the product and just want the linkts coming into their site for search engine rankings. I HATE really dislike those kinds of posts. They come off as insincere and are generally not appropriate for whatever website is doing the review. I’m always so surprised at who wants me to do a review for their site and which one of my blogs they want me to put it on (Like lighting websites on my homeschool blog). So finding quality items, services, and websites to review (even a negative review on a quality product is better than great review on an irrelavant one), is extremely difficult.

That is where services like Business2Blogger comes in! This is a free service that matches up Bloggers with Businesses. And most importantly they do it for free! Free to the Blogger and free to the business. Which is great, because in this economy free is always good!

So how does a service like Business2Blogger work?

A business will come to Business2Blogger and tell them about what they want reviewed. It could be a book, website, service, or other product. They tell them what it is, and what they need from the bloggers and then also what the bloggers will get for doing the review. Most of the time you’ll get the product for free, sometimes you’ll get paid. (I personally like the free stuff best. Not that I don’t like getting paid, but because most of the time I get some really cool things that I never heard of before. I love being the first kid on the block with the newest and greatest!)

Once all the basics are given to Business2Blogger, they send out an email to all the bloggers on their list. The bloggers on the list fill out an application to do whatever review needs to be done, then the business hires some of the bloggers, and everyone lives happily ever after!

I haven’t personally gotten on the list of Business2Blogger. I’ve signed up for the list, and am anxiously awaiting my first email from them. So this is only the FIRST review I”ll be doing on BBusiness2Blogger. However I have been with other companies that do the same thing and have had some great results with them. Some better than others, of course. You can see some of the ones that I would recommend on my sidebar (you won’t see the ones I wouldn’t recommend there, and they’ll remain nameless in this blog post). I”m rather excited about Business2Blogger because of some of the people I know who are already using their services to get reviews for their blogs. They are other bloggers that I enjoy reading and trust their opinions on things. So that gives me confidence to join this organization. However, if I see that I don’t like them after joining, I’ll be sure to tell you! But I have a feeling, my next post about Business2Blogger is going to be raving about them!! And in a good way!

My suggestion though is always to check them out for yourself. Give them a test drive, see what you find, and if you end up not liking them, then you can unsubscribe. But if you like them, and you get some great product or heck even some money! Well, lets all shout about it on the proverbial cyber mountain top!

Don’t you just hate it when you really need to update your blog and draw a blank? Well, one of the best ways to jump start those creative juices is to simply look at the calendar. How simple is that?

Every month, week and day, there are some really strange, fun and downright funny holidays and observances celebrated everywhere. In fact, you can even make up your own ‘holiday’ to celebrate on your blog with your readers – that’s how easy it is to come up with days of posts at a time. But you don’t have to make it up yourself. It’s hard enough coming up with a post. Here’s a blogging calendar I found that feature some of these holidays. The other nice thing is, it has room to jot down your own ideas and you can use it to literally plan out the year’s content – or just a month or two ahead if you’re not the planning type. This really helps keep your blog going without rushing to write last minute posts.

Download and check it out for yourself. I bet you can find a couple of posts just off those dates you can write about. In fact, you can write about them right away and schedule them. Your readers will have fun and marvel at how you are so on top of the holidays and seasons.

Wow! I was going to write an article on one way that I found to make money with twitter that I felt was responsible, reliable, and ethical, while not being spammy. I knew about two different services, Magpie & Sponsored Tweets. I like Sponsored Tweets and didn’t like Magpie…. or so I thought.

I realized that I hadn’t actually been on Magpie since it first came out and I wanted to make sure that my opinions were still founded in facts and that I had them all straight. So I went to Magpie’s website and had a look around. One of the things that I previously didn’t like about the service was the lack of control that the Twitterer had over how often the tweets went out and what they had to say. I’m guessing I wasn’t the only one who had a problem with that, because they have solved that issue. Maybe a little late though, since they have a bad reputation based on how they started out. Once I realized that some of my original problems with Magpie had been resolved, I decided to take a look at what other services had to offer for making money on Twitter. I was kind of surprised at how much I found online…. or maybe I wasn’t so surprised, more overwhelmed with the amount of it all. But this is what I’ve found so far and how I personally feel about the whole thing.

First let me explain some of the issues that a lot of people on twitter have with advertising via Twitter. There are a lot of people who feel that if you are paid for a post/tweet that your opinion is suddenly invalidated because of being paid. Some feel that social media, especially places like Twitter, should be more personalized and not have any advertising through personal twitter streams. Adam Ostrow wrote an article on Mashable all about his opinion about advertising through Twitter. One of the things Adam worries about is ” Ultimately, I think the issue will be less about your Twitter stream getting polluted with ads – because you can control that – and rather, seeing which users are willing to risk their reputation in pursuit of a few dollars.” He ads that at leas ton Twitter you can “simply unfollow anyone you see using a #spon hashtag if you find this form of advertising particularly offensive.” But is this really a problem? Do people generally hate the idea of passing along information and getting paid for it so much?

My personal opinion is completely different… as long as it’s not “spammy”, I think it’s find. Of course what defines “spammy” is dependant on the person who is defining it (kinda sounds like the definition of “reasonable”: That which is deemed reasonable by reasonable men). My definition of spammy is continuous unwanted advertising. On twitter the spammers, at least by my definition, are the ones who are constantly tweeting “Do you want 15,000 followers?” or “Learn how this mom lost 69 lbs in two weeks” or anything similar. First, I don’t want 15000 followers, I have plenty as it is, and it’s hard enough to keep up with the ones I have now. Secondly, if I really wanted that many followers or to lose that much weight that fast, I’d go to google! If I was going to use my twitter stream to find something out, I’d send out a tweet saying something like “need help losing a few bounds, anyone have a recomendation?” Of course with a tweet like that, I’d be getting about 15000 followers of spammers! But I think you get the idea.

So where does all that fit in with Sponsored Tweets, Magpie and those services? Well, as long as they give the twitter user the ultimate control over how many tweets are sent out, what the content of the tweet is, and the disclaimers, then I think they can be a great way to make a little money on the side. I recently got paid for sending out a tweet for KMart. It was a simple tweet that told my followers about a special going on and gave a little link that sent them to KMart’s Twitter Account. Since I have done this sort of thing for NUMEROUS other companies, blogs, people, websites, I felt like the tweet was very appropriate for me and my followers. I sent out two tweets of this type for KMart a few days apart from each other. So far, I haven’t heard any negative feedback from anyone about those tweets. I also didn’t see an influx of people unfollowing me either. So I feel like it was a success so far!

Here are some of the services that will pay you for tweets and a little bit about each of them.

Sponsored Tweets is my personal favorite so far. You have the most control over your account and what is sent to your twitter stream. You set your price per tweet and price per click. You set the keywords for advertising, the category of tweets, and how you approve the tweets. When you get a sponsor a message is sent to you, either via DM (direct message) or email. Then you take a look at the sponsored tweet and either approve it or reject it. Then depending on what type of tweet it is, you’ll either send it out to your stream as is, or write your own tweet. Then you’ll either get paid for the single tweet or for the clicks that come from that tweet. They have just now started a referral program that you can sign up for as well. When a tweeter signs up using one of your links or badges you will receive 10% of SponsoredTweets portion of revenue for each successful transaction that Tweeter makes. So there are a few ways to make money using this service. Here is a screen shot of my personal account on Sponsored Tweets.

Magpie is one of the first twitter advertising services that was available. In the beginning they were more spam than anything else. Luckily they have changed some of the problems but I just don’t know if it’s too little too late or not. One of the things they’ve changed is the auto-approval of tweets being sent out. Now instead of Magpie just sending out ads, you get to approve them or reject them. Which means nothing is sent out that you don’t feel comfortable with. However, once you approve an ad it will be sent out automatically per a set ratio of ads/tweet. I have mine set at 1 ad after 50 tweets. I don’t tweet all THAT often, so this could take several days to ad up. Their default ratio is 1 ad for every 10 tweets, but you can set it for the maximum which is 1 ad for every 200 tweets. How you set up the ratio depends entirely on how much you tweet. Personally I don’t like the idea of a tweet being sent out more than once unless I REALLY like it. So I doubt I’ll be using this service.

RevTwt is another advertising service that I signed up for, but I haven’t used it yet, so I don’t know if I’m going to use it or not. From what I’ve seen so far of the various ads being sent out from other users it seems that this service is the most spammy. I’ve seen more people with just tweets about “Stop paying for Teeth Whitening” or “Lose 50 lbs in 3 weeks” and they are all part of RevTwt. I’ve unfollowed a lot of people just based on those tweets alone. I’m really quite tired of getting spam tweets like that in my stream. Although I think it’s more of HOW people are using the service than just the service alone. Because you can set up your account to NOT have auto post enabled, so you control when the posts go out and which ones go out. Just like with any other tool, it’s the user who can either make it useful or dangerous. And it seems that most of the people who use RevTwt like to be annoying!

Then there is Twittad. Twittad lets you use your Twitter account background as an advertising spot. You sell your background on your twitter account and you get paid by the hour for the length of time that ad is on your account. They have two ways to use their service. The first way is for advertisers to find you based on keywords, locale, and number of followers. When you accept a sponsor, a tweet is sent out to your stream, and your background is changed in your account. The length of advertising term is determined before you accept the sponsor. Then at the end of the term another tweet is sent out. The second way you can use their service is as an “Opt in”. You search for the various advertising campaigns and then request those advertisers. Once the terms are accepted, the rest of the service is run the same as above.

I hope that at the very least this article will help you to decide how you want to monetize your twitter stream, if you decide you want to at all. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with getting paid to tweet or post if it’s done properly, appropriately and ethically and with full transparency! As long as you keep true to yourself and don’t go overboard in sending things out constantly that have nothing to do with you and your life, then you should do fine and make a little money. Don’t expect to get rich with these various advertising services. You may make a few dollars extra a month, but all of them have a $50 minimum in your account to withdraw funds. The higher the minimum the longer it usually takes to reach that minimum… or so that’s what I’ve found for the most part. Whatever you decide, good luck and keep it real!

All around the internet I’ve been hearing about Virtual Assistants. One of my close friends who is a business/life coach raves about her VA who helps her with emails, daily tasks, scheduling and much more. Her virtual assistant helps her to focus on her business by taking the hassle of the “little” jobs off her shoulders. This sounds like a great thing, for both the busy professional and the stay at home mom who wants to make a good living.

But I had some questions about being a Virtual Assistant. After doing some research and asking a few of my friends about it, these are the answers I got for my questions. If you’re thinking about becoming a Virtual Assistant, these questions might be helpful to you as well!

What is a virtual assistant?

A virtual assistant or VA is a self-employed, home-based entrepreneur who assists other businesses, often in administrative work. In other words, a VA is an office assistant who never has to step into her client’s office! In addition, most business owners have particular tasks that they will turn over to their virtual assistants, and these can go beyond basic office or business administration.

What skills do I need to become a VA?

The basic skills a VA needs are office and business administration skills. A VA also needs to be highly organized, communicate effectively and pay careful attention to detail. Some clients look for additional technical skills, such as writing, marketing, social media, blog or website maintenance, and multimedia production – even podcasting!

The skill set you’ll need as a VA depends on the type of clients you want to work with. Find out what they NEED and build your skills to respond effectively.

What kinds of work does a VA do?

VAs commonly do office-related stuff, such as:

responding to emails
making travel arrangements
sending out faxes
researching and compiling information
business writing
typing up notes or transcribing audios

In addition, VAs nowadays are often expected to:

write and publish or schedule blog posts
work with autoresponders
rewrite private label rights content
optimize a website for search engines
create a slideshow presentation
update websites
set up social networking profiles/pages
create videos and publish them online

Is being a VA a good option for Moms?

Oh yes! A lot of work at home Moms I know are VAs and they make good incomes from the comfort of their home, without having to leave their children in the care of others. Virtual assistance is a home business, which means it’s flexible. You decide how many hours a day you want to work, on which days, what type of work you want to do, and even whom you will work with.

On the other hand, if you have small children, remember that occasionally you will need to be on the phone or webchat with a client, supplier or other associate. In this case you’ll need somebody else looking after your small children so you can have some quiet and be able to focus on the call or chat.

How much money can I make as a VA?

The hourly rate of VAs depends on several factors. These include their skills and experience, whether they specialize in certain services or a particular industry, and any certifications they may have (those who are certified by recognized institutions charge higher fees). VA fees vary widely, ranging anywhere from around $15 to $70 per hour. So you can see, it’s entirely possible for a VA to make a full-time income working at home.

Ok, I’m interested. Where do I begin?

You can try and figure everything out yourself, of course. But better yet, get the guidance of experienced VAs who have successful virtual assistance businesses. Two such VAs are Jen Houck and Nell Taliercio who have a combined experience of over 5 years in virtual assistance. They share their success stories and step-by-step tips in the Just Add Sweat Guide To Becoming A Virtual Assistant.

The guide includes:

an audio course on everything from setting up your VA business, to marketing your services and finding and keeping clients
a workbook to get you into action
5 videos teaching essential Internet skills
…and more.

This is the guide that will get your VA business up and running in no time. Who knows? Becoming a virtual assistant may be the next perfect “job” for you.

I just read a recent hiring trend report from Elance.com hiring trends for February and found that article writing is one of the top 5 skills that businesses are outsourcing to freelancers. It’s really no surprise, especially since Elance caters mostly to online businesses. After all, what is the Internet made of? Images and WORDS and it’s those words that are crucially important.

And believe me, most Internet marketers don’t have either the skill or the time to write – or both, and that means a lucrative opportunity for people like you with some writing skills.

But outside of article writing, there are other in-demand skills for online ghostwriting, such as copywriting, blogs, press releases, email marketing, white papers and more. This means less competition for you and more opportunities to specialize and actually charge MORE for your services.

If you’ve been thinking of breaking into ghostwriting and doing it quickly, I recommend this guide to ghostwriting. It will show you:

- How to market your services without spending on advertising
- Where to find clients with deep pockets
- Why and how to put up a professional website
- Which industries are virtual gold mines for ghostwriters
- How much to charge to actually make profit
- How to set yourself apart from your competition
- How to develop your portfolio especially when you haven’t had a single client yet

and more!

To have a successful ghostwriting business, you need the right tools and strategies that successful entrepreneurs use. This guide gives you the stories of two successful ghostwriters who earn a full-time income writing from home. Not only are they inspirational, but they give some great tips too.

The best part is, because this guide is written for Moms, the price is just right. In fact, you’ll easily earn back the cost of this guide with your first writing assignment. I better just stop writing about it and let you check it out yourself. Click here to learn more about the Just Add Sweat Home Business Ideas for Women, Get Paid To Write: Become A Ghostwriter.

The growth of the Internet and people looking to earn some extra money from home, paved the way for MLM companies to double over the last decade. With this growth in interest in network marketing, many new companies have sprung up to join the ranks of the time-tested, older MLM companies.

If you are thinking of starting a side career in MLM, or just want to see how your current company measures up, take note of the critical things to look for when choosing an MLM company.

The first thing to look for is stability. It would be best if an MLM company has been in business for 2 to 5 years. There is really something about companies that have already “stood the test of time”.

The longer the MLM company has been around, the more chance of it staying around. There are enough things to worry about in network marketing, such as sponsoring and advertising, without having to wonder if your company will be around next year.

Even if you were able to build the biggest downline and become the highest earner in the MLM company, it would not matter if they suddenly shut down. There are never any guarantees, but a company with a longer track record generally has more chances of longevity.

The second thing to look for is the one in charge of the company. Who is the president, and who are the directors? What is their track record? Have they spent time in the network marketing industry, or are they new to it all? What businesses have they been involved with in the past?

If you do not know the answer to these questions, call or email the company to find out. It is critical to know the answers to these questions from the outset. If you plan to spend many years with the MLM company, you would want to be dealing with people who are honest, savvy, and have integrity in and outside of the business world.

Third, is the product being marketed. Generally speaking, the more products the better. The fewer products you have, the more chance your prospects or potential customers might not be interested.

There was one MLM telecommunications company that recently went bankrupt. They basically only had a few products in the industry. Perhaps if they had added some nutritional products, they could have survived.

In addition to this, the products should be competitively priced, and somewhat unique.
Fourth, know if it is easy to start in that MLM company. Can people join online, or do they have to fill out paper forms?

Having the option to join online makes the whole process a lot easier. On the same note, having the option to join free will open up your opportunity to many more people.

Your MLM company should let people join free and allow them to market the products to earn income. Once someone has joined free, they have partially committed to the business. This makes it easier for you and your company to follow up with them, via mail or email.

Lastly, the more automated the MLM company is, the better. They should give you a personal company website that you can refer prospects to. A prospect should be able to contact you from that page. And the MLM company should have a series of emails that follow up with your prospects.

Here is a list of MLM Companies that I have found on the internet. This list is by no means a complete list, nor is it a recomendation for that business. Please do your research on each company before you decide to join.
